Magnetic tape does not last forever. The picture drops out, the audio goes thin, and eventually the reel sticks to itself. Anything from the eighties or nineties is already past the point where waiting is free.

Bring them here and get files back. Your original tapes come home with you either way.

What I can read

Most of what is in that box.

If you are not sure what format you have, take a photo of the label and send it to me. I will tell you what it is and whether it is worth doing.

  • VCR recordings of all kinds
  • DV, MiniDV and Digital8
  • Audio cassette and microcassette

Something not on this list? Ask. If I cannot read it I will say so rather than take the job.

How it works

Drop them off, or mail them in.

    Tell me what you have

    Roughly how many tapes and what format. A photo of the pile is plenty. You get a price and a turnaround before anything is handed over.

  2. 02

    Get them to me

    Drop off in Southbridge, or mail them in if you are further out. I will confirm they arrived and what condition they are in.

  3. 03

    I transfer them

    Played through and captured in real time, which is why a long tape takes as long as it takes. Usually about a week for a normal batch.

  4. 04

    Files, and your tapes back

    MP4 files you can keep, copy and share, on a drive or a download. A DVD instead if you would rather. The originals come back to you.

  • One file per tape, labeled the way you labeled it
  • A DVD copy instead, if you prefer one
  • Your original tapes, returned

Limits

  • A degraded tape transfers as it is. I cannot restore what the tape has lost
  • Mold or a snapped shell may not be recoverable, and I will tell you before charging you
  • I do not copy commercially published tapes

If a tape turns out not to be worth doing, you do not pay for that one.

Nobody regrets doing it early.
